Head to the neighboring island of Porto Santo. From the beautiful sandy beach to the historical monuments, Porto Santo is a great addition to your visit to Madeira.
Porto Santo, also known as Ilha Dourada “Golden Island”, is located just 43 km northeast of Madeira. The island has what Madeira lacks – the southeastern part of the island is lined with a marvelous, nine-kilometer long, natural sandy beach with golden sand.
You can travel to Porto Santo by plane with Binter Canarias or by ferry with Porto Santo Line.
Binter Canarias operates two flights to the island a day – one at 7.30 am and the other at 6.30 pm. You can then fly back to Madeira either at 8:30 am. or at 7.30 pm. The trip takes approximately 25 minutes and costs around €60 per person. You can also fly from Porto Santa to Lisbon or Denmark.
The Lobo Marinho ferry operated by Porto Santo Line departs from Funchal every day at 8 am and returns from Porto Santo at 6 pm. A return ticket in high season will cost you around €40. If you’d like, you can also take your car with you, but the price for transporting the vehicle is significantly higher. See the Porto Santo Line price list for 2024.
Porto Santo is an ideal place to relax on the beach, but you will also find cozy bars, an exceptional golf course, a botanical garden and the Quinta das Palmeiras mini-zoo, as well as many other attractions for those who would like to take a break from lying on the beach. If you are interested, you can easily explore the island by taxi, jeep, rental car, scooter or quad bike.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay, we are friends with Casa Branca in Porto Santo – take a look.
