6th day: Levada to Alecrim (PR6.2) & Levada das 25 Fontes (PR6)

Discover the magical levadas in the UNESCO protected area of ​​Rabaçal, Alecrim and 25 Fontes

Sixth day of you discovery journey through Madeira, we will take you to the heart of the island’s nature, where you will discover two beautiful levadas: Levada do Alecrim and Levada das 25 Fontes.

This walk will take you through beautiful nature of the UNESCO protected area of ​​Rabaçal, where you will find water springs, lakes and waterfalls.

Set your satnav for the parking lot in Rabaçal. Then, as you start walking down the road towards the Rabaçal House, turn right and enter Levada do Alecrim. Choosing this route will take you on a two-turn circuit to waterfalls, ponds and even descends to the Lagoa de Vento (Windy Lake).

It will also take you directly above the Risco waterfall, which is said to be the highest on the entire island. Here you can enjoy the peace and quiet while the tourist crowds gather below you at the waterfall.

After completing the circuit, you will descend back to the House of Rabaçal. You can enjoy lunch here before you continue to the Levada das 25 Fontes.

Once you return back to the Rabaçal House, get the shuttle bus back to the parking lot or climb the last bit of hill on foot.

Important Information

The descent from Levada to Alecrim to the House of Rabacal is difficult for those who have problems with their knees, so if you do not dare to risk it, return the same way back to the parking lot.

From here you can either walk down to Levada das 25 Fontes on the road, or choose just one of the levadas for a walk.

To return from the Rabaçal House to the the parking lot, catch the shuttle bus for €3, or walk up the hill for approx. 3 km.

Levada to Alecrim is about 8.5 km long and takes about 3.5 hours. Levada das 25 Fontes is then 2.5 km long, and adds about 2 hours, because you will find far more tourists here.
