5th day: PR1 - Mountain Trek Pico do Arieiro - Pico Ruivo

Embark on a challenging but unforgettable PR1 trek from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak.

It’s time to stretch your legs! On the fifth day, you will embark on a mountain expedition that will take you from Pico do Arieiro to the highest mountain of Madeira, Pico Ruivo.

This route connects the two highest peaks of Madeira and offers unforgettable bird’s-eye views of the island. The journey is challenging, yes, but the reward are the breathtaking panoramas and the feeling of victory when you reach the top of Pico Ruivo.

The beginning of the trail is at the top of Pico do Arieiro (1818 m above sea level). Here you can find a parking lot about 500m below the summit (on your way up). Do not try to drive all the way to the top, parking at the top is prohibited in high season and the police often controls the traffic.

From Pico do Arieiro it is approximately 6 km to the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo. It takes a good 6 hours (and more!) to walk there and back. It’s only 12 km, but the elevation is significant, and lots and lots of stairs and tunnels that you didn’t even dream about.

This trip is on everyone’s bucket list so make sure you get here early. If the weather is flaky and you think it will start raining soon then you’d better leave it for another day. The views during the trek are incredible and it’s a fantasy for anyone who loves the mountains. This can quickly turn into misery if the weather conditions are poor.

Just under Pico Ruivo you will find a mountain hut with toilets and a water tap. They now sell refreshments too so make sure to drink and eat something before you take a deep breath and turn to go back to Pico do Arieiro.

The total length of the route is approximately 12 km with a significant elevation on the way there and back, and you spend about 6 hours (or more!) on the way.

We recommend leaving early in the morning to avoid the masses, and so you return before dark.

It is a good idea to have plenty of water and food with you.

Most people prefer this trip as a transfer, where the driver will pick you up from your accommodation, take you to the start of the trek on Pico do Arieiro and then waits for you on the other side in Achada da Teixeira (near Pico Ruivo) to take you back to your accommodation.

You will also find taxis at the parking lot in Achada da Teixeira – but the price can be exaggerated, so consider your physical condition and the weather before you go.
